Director's statement Aleksei wanted to make this film his entire life. Reba's militia, referred to as "the Greys", are responsible for the murder of many intellectuals, including scientists and writers. It is a demanding work, in every sense of the word.
He instead gives the fellow scientist advice—that it is "hard to be a God". He assumes the identity of Don Rumata, a nobleman who resides in a large castle surrounded by poverty.
Hard to be a god
When Rumata returns to his castle, he finds the local area has been taken over by religious zealots in his absence, called "the Blacks", who prove to be just as oppressive as the Greys. Upon returning to his village, Rumata becomes annoyed when he discovers that Budakh, apparently a great doctor and intellectual, is actually a bumbling fool who is unable to even urinate properly.
A love that was there, tangible, alive, and that resisted through the hardest of conditions. Rumata teaches Pampa his famed ature sword-fighting technique. The next day, the Greys attack the castle and kill Ari.
Rumata reasons with Reba and is freed, along with Budakh. Plot[ edit ] A group of 30 scientists travel from Earth to a nearly-identical alien planet that is culturally and technologically centuries behind.

Edit Storyline A group of scientists are sent to the planet Arkanar to help the local civilization, which is in the Medieval phase of its own history, to find the right path to progress. You can see why I gave it four stars. During his travels, Rumata witnesses the backward ways of the locals and becomes increasingly frustrated with them.
As if the question were: what would you do in God's place? Enraged, Rumata butchers their leader. Months later, during the winter, Rumata is shown traveling away from Arkanar.
The next morning, a group of travelers investigates the aftermath of the ensuing battle, which has cost the lives of most of Arkanar's inhabitants. Behind them, though, is production de that is utterly convincing.
One night, while guarding the prince, the Greys besiege the castle and attempt to arrest Rumata. He eventually finds him, as well as Baron Pampa, who has been tortured by Reba's men.
Later, Rumata meets his friend Pampa, a drunken and washed-up baron. He returns to Reba on peaceful terms and searches the sewers of the castle for Budakh. The leader of the travelers, another incognito scientist from Earth, offers to take Rumata back to Earth, but Rumata refuses.
It just never ends. There, he lives with Ari, a young woman whom he has taken as his bride, and the juvenile prince of Arkanar. Slavery is rife, and the influence of Reba's Greys turns Arkanar into a police state.
The action is a little hard to follow at times because of the way German throws the viewer into it; more often than not the camera seems to function as an unseen observing character, and a lot fod the actors will look directly into the lens, make some facial indications, or even speak to the camera. Sounds great, right?
Rumata discovers that Budakh is an impostor, and that the real Budakh is still imprisoned w Don Reba's castle. One finds oneself in a problematic relationship to the screen—am I supposed to talk back? The road was a long one. German cannot exorcise the torment of Stalinism from his consciousness; instead he uses art to communicate the reasons it existed and the way it felt for those victimized by it.

Indeed I did. Its vision is so monstrously realized that even as it repulses, it makes almost any other film you would care to put next to it seem puny, silly, unnecessary. Rumata's presence divides local opinion; some treat him as a God, others despise him. Anton, one of the scientists from Earth, is sent to infiltrate the goc populace of the Kingdom of Arkanar and help them progress as a society, although he is forbidden from getting involved with local politics or forcibly interfering with the advancement of technology or culture.
